Tell us about yourself.
Hi, I’m Andrea Nero PhD, but you can call me Andee. I’m originally from Chicago. I’ve studied at several schools including Elmhurst College, Sam Houston State University, University at Buffalo and Harvard University. My PhD in history is from University at Buffalo, where I worked with the celebrated scholars Erik Seeman and Tamara Thornton. My doctoral research studied how people who are often overlooked due to their race, economic class or gender were actually important historical figures who helped shape America’s first arts and science nonprofits. Right now, I’m working with Harvard on research to help arts organizations in a crisis of public confidence, like the Orlando Museum of Art, improve and serve their communities.
What do you do in your spare time?
When I’m not working, I love to write. This year, I even wrote and published a book called “Italiana Americana” in just one month! I also serve as a go-to expert for national media discussions about project management and diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and belonging (DEIAB)—I was recently featured in an article on Forbes Advisor! And, for fun, I like to have my friends over for epic karaoke sessions–I especially love to sing New Wave songs!
What drew you to ASI?
The mission and values of ASI align perfectly with my own beliefs. I believe that everyone has valuable insights to bring to the table, yet too often, we are stifled by inadequate advocacy, access, educational opportunities and funding. ASI stands as a lighthouse for the creative community, offering voice, tools and financial support, making my association with the organization a logical and heartfelt choice.
What motivates you?
Observing the significant impact of nonprofits in Western New York fuels my drive. These organizations often wield greater influence in people’s lives than is commonly acknowledged, allowing them to make tangible change. The region has a palpable need for tools and resources that can pave the way for success and I am committed to contributing to this cause through our local nonprofits.
What is something you hope to accomplish in the coming year – personal or professional?
For myself, I’m working on getting a literary agent to help publish my fourth book, “The Science of Exclusion: The Unsung Heroes of American Science,” by the end of 2024. At ASI, I want to expand our inclusivity across all five counties we serve. I am also keen on securing additional funding to further enrich the creative community we passionately support.
